Given the increasingly hostile and retaliatory actions that large corporate entities use/employ against any individual that speaks up regarding workplace malfeasance or abuses of power against employees, patrons, benefactors, clients, and well-healed universities as well against concerned citizens, faculty, staff, and the student bodies is it any wonder that these same tactics are being employed against (and by) anyone who has a mind of their own and dares to question the status quo? The same could be said of certain government actions against perceived enemies of the 'state'. I've little doubt there are some 'bad actors' influencing the government's actions whether it be in the marketplace or other storied institutions that should have been brought to the forefront long ago.
Much needed change often wreaks havoc especially as it regards older systems or institutions who've resisted modernizing in the name of maintaining important traditions at the expense of meeting the needs of the individuals, states, and countries they purport to serve, Many individuals, systems, and institutions, whether executive, legislative, judicial, or regulatory agencies haven't been held accountable to the general public or to governmental beneficiary's nor the private and public institutions they claim to serve.
